Nikki was to me so fascinating because not a day was spent with her without a good surprise. One fall morning as we lived in a mountain cottage rented from my sister Yvette in the Adirondaks, I notice Nikki sitting on the edge of our bed knitting without saying a word, but her lips counting something silently. I paid no attention, raking leaves for a few hours as winter was fast coming. We had been together for barely a year and I still had no idea of what this woman was capable of. Writer, artist, sculptor, humorist, musician, she could keep me surprised and smiling every day of the month. But art-knitter? Creator of a pair of matching ponchos for her and our pomeranian, all of it completed in hours only, improvised and gorgeous yet done with no plan or written instructions except for her lips counting silently while her fingers pushed this or that thread forward. Just amazing talent and creativity.
